I wrote this after the Manchester attack. Now, after Saturday's attack in London, it makes it hard to believe in the message of this poem... but I have to believe there is still hope, leading to love. Because otherwise... what is there?

And then sometimes
out of the deepest depths
true Hope arises

When it feels like all has been lost
When it feels like Hate has won
One voice is enough
to bring a whole crowd back on its feet

it may be the path
that leads us to Love.

A little something I wrote in October, but don't remember writing! Those texts are often my favourite, pulled from the depths of my subconscious...

Wandering among the trees, I found a lost city. She called to me in a voice I thought I recognised from a dream.
Come to me she said.
I'm waiting.
So I put down my bags, let go of my compass, and walked towards the voice.

The streets were empty and bright but still I walked on, called by a sound I couldn't define.
It was a song. I recognised it as I turned the corner. It was the song if my lover, the one I had left behind, the one I hadn't met yet, the one I had been hoping for.

So I hurried to that voice, to that song, and the streets were suddenly filled with memories of future stories that I didn't know.

And across the road, there she was. With her familiar smile and her hopeful eyes. And the stories we still had to invent.

And as the light grew dim and time stood still we danced and we danced in the city of my dreams.

J'ai voulu me joindre à eux

Wow, two years since I last shared a poem here... I haven't stopped writing, but my creative juices have mostly been directed towards specific projects. Or have been too personal to share.
This one is pretty raw and personal, but, as the wonderful and inspiring Sarah Slean just posted (as usual, she always comes up exactly when I need her in my life!): "Let your hair down and your scars show!"
So here are some scars from about a year ago.

Now is the time of the Little Deaths
the Shedding of the skin
piece by piece particle by particle atom by atom

I am changing
leaving the dead parts of me behind
Like a phoenix, reborn from the ashes of a former life

It's not always easy
Death hurts sometimes
the process of dying is not a peaceful one
it can be full of rage and sorrow
the former self screaming
begging to be allowed to stay

But the old skin is already too tight
and I can't breathe inside it
so I squirm
and pant
and cry
and shake
until there is nothing
nothing left but a shell
and a naked newborn
terrified by this new world.

Quick! Protect it! Rebuild the old walls!

But no
it must be allowed to take its first steps
to taste and hear and smell and touch
this terrifying exciting
new world.

This is the time of the Little Deaths
This is the time of the Phoenix.

My troubled mind
Seek an easy answer to all the hate.

Quand les hommes vivront d'amour...

La réponse est là partout si simple
simpliste.

On a oublié comment s'aimer.

On a oublié que
sous nos différences

on est tous
juste
humains.

Late night, beautiful night, with inspiring people, and yet all I could come up with when I started writing was this depressing little poem... Still, I share it, because it's what I promised myself I would do more of this year...

I'm like a haunted house
full of memories and shadows
of regrets and bad aftertastes.
I'm a room full of shadows
of secrets and unsaid words.
I'm like a music box that's forgotten its tune.
I'm a carousel that stopped turning long ago
that hasn't heard the peel of a child's laughter in too long.
I'm like a haunted house
full of empty rooms and hollow hallways
that even the ghosts have abandoned.

So, here's a very short story about hope... or something.

Give me your hand - she said to me.
We'll dance into the sunrise.
She was young. She was Hope. She was Joy.
And I was an old man. I'd forgotten how to dance and I was headed towards the sunset.

Come with me - she said once more.
I can make you love again.
But I'd forgotten how to love, and the pain I'd gathered through the years was too deeply etched into my wrinkles. There was no room left in me for love. Or hope. Or joy.

Hold my hand - she said.
We'll jump over the fire.
But the fires of youth had all been burned, and nothing was left for me but ashes in my mouth, and an aftertaste of regret.

Join us - she said
As she pointed behind me, towards a crowd of daffodils dancing in the breeze.
But I'd long ago forgotten the daffodils which delight the mind of the poet. Poetry is for fools and lovers, and I was neither.

Kiss me - she laughed.
And her lips were pink, and full, and lovely.
And so I kissed her
And took her hand
And jumped over the fire.

Mes mains douces tendres

qui me répulse.

Inconfort d'une épave qui se cherche.
Depuis trop longtemps.

Jugée par moi-même me suis arrêtée

In 2011, I wrote this poem, in honour of a forgotten building. Since then, the building has been torn down, to allow the Rideau Centre to expand. Here's my revised version of the same poem:

There
was a building at the corner of Rideau and Nicholas
streets
A building forgotten for almost twenty
years

Almost two decades of oblivion
Almost twenty years
ignored

And when you told people about it
And
when you'd mention it
most people didn't remember
seeing it this huge building on Rideau street
most people had forgotten it this beautiful
building on Nicholas

And yet
over twenty years ago
it was called Ogilvy's
And yet
one hundred years ago it
was called Ogilvy's
one of Ottawa's first department
stores
famous for its Tartan boxes
and high-end products.

But
today it's gone
forgotten
today
it's just another construction site
slightly
problematic
with its Heritage designation
its former beauty
its torn down facade.

For
so long it was sad
and lonely
and ignored
like the many
homeless vagrants surrounding it
walking by it every day
The ones we
forget
The ones we've ignored
The ones who've slowly
disappeared
Waiting for the ones in charge
to do something
to take charge
to take a stand
And
meanwhile
this beautiful old building
slowly fades away
in our memory
all but
forgotten what used to be in this empty spot
just another
derelict
forgotten ignored
lost
in this
beautiful capital of ours.

Ma ville est une histoire
que je veux vous conter....

L'histoire commence avec une guerre
qui a déjà deux cents ans

L'histoire commence avec un canal
miracle d'ingénierie

L'histoire commence avec des ouvriers
des immigrants qui s'installent
Des groupes rivaux qui bâtissent
sur ces terres inhospitalières
sur ces marais embourbés
où la malaria fait des ravages
dans cette forêt touffue
où tout n'est que danger
pour ces ouvriers qui s'y installent.

L'histoire se poursuit
de batailles en révoltes
de rivalités en débats parlementaires

L'histoire se poursuit
et lentement devient mienne
avec l'arrivée de ma famille
dans ce village devenu ville modeste

L'histoire devient celle
de ma grand-mère
élevée par-dessus une forge
rue Clarence

L'histoire devient celle
de mon arrière-grand-mère
qui conduit son chariot
au Marché By toutes les semaines

L'histoire devient celle

Goulburn
et Blackburn
et Chapel

L'histoire devient mienne
je me l'approprie
j'écoute les histoires de ma famille
je vois les paroles
de ceux qui ont connu mon village
avant.

L'histoire devient mon histoire

Zelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001887811846744311noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7509606179772289123.post-22357595008455771422012-06-12T16:41:00.000-04:002012-07-04T15:35:43.915-04:00Fire Station No. 5

Ville homonyme d'elle-même.

À la fois capitale poltique
- so stuffy so boring -
À la fois ville d'attractions
de célébrations
artistiques.

My bifocal town leads a double life.
She's a gal who knows how to throw a party
whether for the whole nation
or for a select group of friends.

She swings many ways, this little capital of mine
and none of her lovers knows about the others.

Elle se fait une beauté artificielle
pour les touristes les dignitaires
en visite officielle
- so stuffy so elegant and demure -

And then she lets down her hair

My city has a secret life
told only in whispers
or on flyers blowing in the wind.

Des murmures et des rumeurs
qui disent

Something's happening in this town
Something exciting
Something we should keep on repeating.Zelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001887811846744311noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7509606179772289123.post-74662180311441210952012-06-04T23:58:00.001-04:002012-06-04T23:58:52.736-04:00Ville propretteUn nouveau poème ottavien, somewhat tongue-in-cheek!
Me revoici donc à écrire sur l'écriture

I am both
Or neither
All at once.

Je suis une bâtarde métissée
Two-tongued.
Tongue-tied in more than one tongue.

Le langage m'est parfois difficile
et je trébuche
Twisting my tongue around words that have a strange taste
And trying to fit into one single definition.

Mais c'est impossible
Parce que je ne suis ni l'une
Ni l'autre.
Somewhere in between
On the edge of speech

Au bord d'un précipice langagier

Riddled with rules I'm not quite familiar with

Don't sound too French.
Éviter les anglicismes.
Don't let them hear my hesitations.

Trying so hard to fit into the wrong hole
Round peg?
Tête carrée?
Yet another poem that I wrote a while ago, without publishing. Short and sweet, for your reading pleasure (I hope).

There are holes in my city
Big gaping holes
in my city's history
Like scars.

There are parts missing
in my city's history
And no one can remember
what used to be there.Zelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001887811846744311noreply@blogger.com4
